Illumination started in Oak Bluffs on Aug. 14, 1869. The event was initially intended as a way of marking the Massachusetts Governor’s visit to the island. Thousands of Island residents and visitors enjoy Grand Illumination each summer, which is a magical night when thousands of colorful Japanese lanterns decorating charming Victorian “gingerbread cottages” light up the night.
The evening starts in the Tabernacle, and seats fill well in advance. The program also includes Community Sing and music by the Vineyard Haven Band, as well as the ceremonial lighting of the first lantern.
Free Event. Goodwill offering encouraged.
